Patricia Sodre and Fernada Daichtman are two creative longboarders from Brazil who teamed up to create NA PRAIA DELAS, a TV show which is aimed at giving back to the sport which has given them so much. They started exchanging ideas on the internet and occasionally meeting in the water for a surf whenever they could. The two friends, one a biologist (Fernanda) and the other graphic designer (Patricia), now travel around the world, surfing, painting and exploring both unknown and very crowded places, mixing urban context and nature.
How did you two meet? And why do you think you two work so well together?
We met in a Longboard Championship in Brazil. We work so well together because we have a lot of things in common and the same dream. And then we became great friends!
Can you talk a little about your backgrounds? When did you first start surfing?
Patricia – My dad is surfer (longboarder), so I started surfing when I was 12 years old (on shortboards). I decided to change to longboard surfing when I was 21 years old and it was love at the first sight. It´s been 11 years now.
Fernanda – I started when I was 11 years old (bodyboarding). I went to Hawaii to live for a while and tried longboard surfing, and I “fell in love”. After returning to Brazil, I dedicated myself to longboard surfing. It´s been 6 years.
What does surfing mean to you?
Surfing means our lifestyle. That’s the way we live.
What is life like as professional surfers in Brazil?
Being a professional surfer in Brazil is not easy, especially being longboarders. We believe there is a devaluation of the longboard category, not only in Brazil but also in other countries. But we love longboard and the lifestyle it provide to us.
How did you come up with the idea for your tv show, “Na Praia Delas”? What’s it about? What can we expect to see in the forthcoming shows?
The idea came from a desire. (both of us) The TV show is about friendship and following your dreams. We want to return to this sport everything it has given to us during all these years.
What do you feel defines the true soul of surfing? How do you plan to revive that true essence?
It means friendship, communion with nature, travel, to meet other people and other cultures… A philosophy of living!
What impact do you hope to have on the surf culture of Brazil?
The longboard culture in Brazil still needs to be widespread. We want to raise the sport and its culture here and encourage more girls to practice and make surfing not only as a competitive sport, but also a sport art, a way of life and shows everything which is envolved with.
Are you two involved in any other projects?
Yes. We have 3 projects for movies (documentaries) and a environmental projects.
What does the future hold for Patricia Sodre and Fernanda Daichtman?
We have a saying here in Brazil: “Everything we plant today, we’ll harvest tomorrow”. We are doing all these projects with love.
