With conflicting reports on the severity of Fukushima’s Daichi outfall, it is hard to know whether the ocean and air across the North Pacific could pose a significant to your long term health. Regardless, naturally protecting yourself from the effects heavy metals is something everyone should educate themselves about considering the amount of toxicity in our modern world.

Here’s some simple lifestyle and dietary steps you can take to make yourself a healthier human:

1. Sea salt and baking soda

Soaking in a bath of Sea salt and baking soda has been shown to help your body rid itself of environmental toxins including radiation

2. Sweating

Your skin is the largest organ in the human body. We are unique in our ability to sweat to maintain body temprature

3. Chelation

“Chelate” really just means “to grab or claw-on to” (toxins). Chelation Therapy generally refers to IV infusions of EDTA, DMSA, DMPS, etc. that rapidly mobilize and attach toxins….and unfortunately vital minerals which must be concurrently resupplied.

4. Iodine rich foods

According the Natural Health News- Seaweeds (and green and black teas for that matter) have been shown to neutralize radioactive isotopes in the body, and contain a high amount of protective natural iodine that would definitely protect the thyroid. Many people are claiming that dulse from Ireland is the safest. The jury is still out on California coastal seaweed, with some people even buying Geiger counters to test everything they consume. Geiger counters are rather blunt tools though, and do not tell you the type of isotope involved. I personally would not eat seaweed from the west coast of North America or Japan, but that’s an individual decision. (Try dulse here.)

5. Vitamin E + C

Combining foods rich in these vitamins has proven to protect brain function in the presence of environmental toxins such as heavy metals like barium and aluminum oxide.

6. Fruits and Veggies

Radiation exposure harms the body’s cells through the formation of free radicals. Its been proven that natural plant- based foods rich in fiber and nutrients aid in the bodys ability to neutralize these dangerous substances. A study conducted on over 30,000 atom bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki showed a 13% lower cancer risk over a twenty year period for those who ate the most fruits and vegetables. Also Russian researchers concluded that high fiber foods helped victims near Chernobyl by accelerating the elimination of nuclides from radioactive elements.

7. Chill out

According to Wikipedia, it’s been shown that stress impairs your body’s ability to detoxify and repair from environmental toxins. Chill out by limiting stimulants like sugar and caffeine and replace with gentle exercise, sun exposure and foods rich in calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids.
