For this new feature, we’ve asked some well-known travelers what they can’t leave home without. To start things off, photographer and world-traveler Chris Burkard lays down his “10 travel essentials.”

1. Big Agnes Stagecoach Waterproof Rolling Duffel

This is the ultimate travel bag with its durability and waterproof exterior. It has plenty of space for everything I may need on the trip and having the rollers allows for easy transportation.

2. Z-Pack Sleeping Bag

I always travel with a sleeping bag for nights that I want to stay out and shoot late into the night. Some places I go to shoot require us to get off the grid for a while and camp for days sometimes weeks.

3. GOAL ZERO Lighthouse 250 Lantern

Lantern and USB power hub in one. This bright lantern has 250 Lumens and three brightness levels and hand crank. Recharge through USB or solar. Also gives you the ability to recharge all your small USB devices right from the lantern. Integrated USB cord to recharge your phone twice, camera, gps, Guide 10, or give a boost to a larger devices.

4. Walkie Talkie

In other countries the last thing I want to do is rely on cell phone service for communication with my team. These come in very handy especially when traveling with multiple cars. They can become the sole source of communication when traveling in another country.

5. Gerber Dime

I never travel without a multi-tool and find myself using these almost everyday. Whether its rigging my gear or cutting something as we build camp, the uses are endless. It is truly an essential item for convenience and safety.

6. Western Digital Nomad Rugged Case

Having portable hard drives are crucial for backing up images on the road. I rely on the very reliable Western Digital hard drives and they make a case that protects my stored images from any damage. With these images being all my work from a trip it is important to keep them as safe and secure as possible.

7. Ollo Clips

They always say the best camera is the one that you always have. And in that case my best camera has to be my iPhone. Ollo clips make attachments for the iPhone so you can shoot wide angle, telephoto, polarized, and many more options. They have taken my mobile phone to another level of photography.

8. Sony a7

This camera is one of the most compact full frame cameras out there and the image quality is nothing short of remarkable. I have been using this on all my trips for shooting landscapes and lifestyles. It is a great travel camera that allows me to keep my travel kit light without sacrificing image quality.

9. SteriPEN

Ultra is the most advanced UV water purifier around. The OLED display clearly indicates treatment and battery status. With an internal rechargeable battery, there’s no need to carry spare batteries.  When fully charged, Ultra will treat 100 half-liters or 50 full-liters of water and its UV lamp will last for 8,000 treatments. It is lightweight and perfect for travel or and adventure where clean water may not be accessible.
